GM, Walmart, and Wall Street don't pay most of their employers (the people with average jobs) any more than any other company. However, unions used to have gangsters(Jimmy Hoffa) (however now a days they just seem to represent equal rights, this wasn't really a good example), trial lawyers have clients who get a lot of money, and agents have players. The examples you used do get criticized as greedy, but not in the same way.

MR. BORAS MAY BE THE BEST AGENT.......DOING HIS BEST TO GET THE MOST AMOUNT OF MONEY FROM THE OWNERS.......CAN'T FAULT HIM FOR THAT.

IF HE WAS YOUR ATTORNEY AND/OR AGENT......WOULDN'T YOU WANT HIM TO DO THAT FOR YOU?

HOWEVER...MANY (IF NOT MOST ) OF ALL ACTIVE PLAYERS WANT THE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP RING,,,,,,,AS MUCH AS THE MONEY.

WHY DID 'A-ROD' MAKE A DIRECT CONTACT WITH YANKEE MANAGEMENT, BYPASSING MR. BORAS ?

IF HE DIDN'T, A-ROD (WHO ALREADY HAD A TON OF DOUGH) MIGHT NEVER HAVE GOTTEN WHAT HE WANTED THE MOST............THE WORLDS SERIES RING.

SOME AGENTS/LAWYERS SHOULD REMEMBER THE STORY OF THE SURGEON WHO SPEAKS TO THE PATIENT'S FAMILY AFTER THE OPERATION IS OVER.

"THE OPERATION WAS A SUCCESS......BUT I'M SORRY TO SAY YOUR FAMILY MEMBER DIED"

ASK THE GREAT PLAYERS WHO RETIRED WITHOUT EVER WINNING THE "BIG ONE"

AND ASK THEM IF THEY WOULDN'T GIVE BACK A LOT OF THEIR BIG BUCKS TO HAVE THAT ELUSIVE TROPHY ON THEIR SHELF...

Do you really think that "America only seems to criticize greed when the villain is a union, a trial lawyer, an agent, and never the people with the actual money, never the employers"?

You must be kidding. Sure -- GM, Walmart, every bank/investment bank on Wall Street -- they've never been criticized as greedy.

This type of liberal tripe is why I don't pay for a subscription to your magazine. Stick to the sports and keep politics out of it.

I agree with the crux of this article. However, it's hard to feel too sympathetic for Boras and the players when they're all essentially colluding with ownership and management to extract more and more revenue from the fans.

Boras is a maniacal genious. Hate to love him, love to hate him. True that every once in a blue moon he makes a mistake (ie: Varitek), but overall, he drives owners insane, and still gets what he wants 9 out of 10 times. He's like a wild animal, patiently waiting for his prey to finally give up. The "mystery team" is genious. Although everyone knows it's BS, it creates doubt, thus creating leverage. He drives the market publicly, and elicits a P.R. nightmare for any who cross him. Absolutely genious.

The Dodgers may have been the only team bidding for Manny but that is the leverage that Boras is talking about. If they wanted Manny's services they were going to have to pay for it even if no one else was willing to pay. Why? Because Manny is a rich man and can just retire without worrying about the bills for the rest of his life if the contract isn't something that he can accept.

The biggest issue that I have with Boras is that he doesn't seem to negotiate equitably. Yes, I have a bias, as he (or his clients rather) has repeatedly shunned my hometown team, The Astros, but the fact is teams who avoid Boras contracts are often better off for it, if they work within budgetary constraints. Boras is not the enemy, GM ignorance is the enemy. Especially in these tighter economic times, teams can build championship clubs with shrewd signings and player development.

I am by no means a Boras sympathizer, but you have to respect a guy who gets billionaires, men who have made their fortunes on smart, carefully crafted investment strategies, to go out and spend a quarter billion dollars for the services of one professional athlete. The fact that he floats out the occasional "mystery team" is a perfectly ethical negotiating tactic in my mind, since he never pairs this "mystery team" with a "mystery offer" (the fast-paced, non-fact-checking media does that for him).

Good article. If Boras ever decides he wants to negotiate my next raise, I'll be on the next flight to Newport Beach.

Yes, Matt- imagine thinking that sports readers would be interested in something other than sports- what were you thinking???

Great piece, as usual. Always enjoy your work.

As usual, great work. However, I take exception with the statement "Owners hate Boras because he walks into their offices on behalf of an Alex Rodriguez or a Mark Teixeira and asks them for $200 million. The fact that this almost always turns out to be the correct market price is irrelevant."

How does that jive with "the mystery team?" Doesn't he artifically inflate a player's market value by lying? Example: He got the Dodgers to pay Manny Ramirez $45M over two years. No one else was offering anything close to that. And, he costs some players tons of money because he misreads the market: He got Jason Varitek to turn down arbitration (where he would've gotten one year, $10M) because he knew he could get more on the open market. The result? Varitek got one year deal for $5M. No one but Boston wanted him.

I am a huge admirer of Taibbi's work generally. I think he's as fine a journalist as we have right now, and I mean that. I also gasped in delight when he called LimpBalls a "fat, pill-popping idiot" on TV.

But he's failed to convince me that Boras is anything more than a sleazebucket. I shall not be moved.

It is not smart, perhaps stupid, to slip a political reference into a sports story. Half the readers will think you're an idiot. Why piss off half your readersip? Ssve it for a political article. You must learn to keep focused.
